Inside the Kornati archipelago

Kornati National Park covers roughly 89 islands, islets and reefs across some 220 km² of sea — almost no permanent residents, no traffic, no noise. Leaving from Pašman we cross into the park in under an hour, which leaves the whole middle of the day for swimming and quiet anchorages instead of transit.

The route below is the one we sail most often. Nothing is fixed: wind direction, sea state and your own pace decide the order, and we are happy to drop a stop entirely if you would rather stay longer somewhere you love.

1. 01

   Crossing into the park

   We leave Pašman early, cut across the Pašman channel and pass the outer islets into the national park. The landscape changes fast — green pine gives way to bare white karst and the water turns a deeper, colder blue.

2. 02

   Telašćica & the cliffs

   The bay of Telašćica on Dugi otok is one of the safest natural harbours in the Adriatic. Its outer side rises into the 'stene' — cliffs that climb well over 100 m straight out of the sea. Ashore there is the salt lake Mir, warmer and saltier than the sea, a short walk from the anchorage.

   Levrnaka & Lojena beach

   Lojena on Levrnaka is the rare sandy beach in a park made of stone, shallow and bright turquoise. A marked path leads up the hill behind it for the view over the whole archipelago. We plan the day so we are here outside the busiest midday window whenever the weather allows.

   Mana & the open-sea reefs

   Mana carries the stone shell of a fake fishing village built for the 1960s film Raubritter, weathered now into something that looks genuinely old. Around it the outer reefs face the open sea, where the cliffs and the swell are at their most dramatic.

5. 05

   Swim stops & lunch

   Between the landmarks we anchor wherever the water is clearest that day for swimming and snorkeling. If you would like a konoba lunch, the family-run taverns around Opat and Vrulje are a natural stop — tell us in advance and we will reserve a table.

6. 06

   The way home

   We return through the channel in the late afternoon light, usually with one last quick swim on the way if there is time and you are still in the mood.
